Town and Country Club
St. Paul, Minnesota
Architect
Robert Foulis
Access Type
Private
The description's sole attribution of the course to Robert Foulis is inaccurate. The origins of the club can be traced back to 1893 when a Scot named George McCree laid out a 5-hole course, and the club "doesn't carry a single 'marquee' architect's name." Golf has been played here since 1893 when McCree marked out the first holes; in 1898, Chicago amateur E.J. Frost designed a nine-hole layout, and by 1907 member Ben Schurmeier and professional Robert Foulis expanded it to eighteen. Robert Foulis was also primarily the club's first golf professional, not the original designer. Robert Foulis was "the first golf pro and expert maker of clubs," acquired from St. Andrew's Golf Club.
