Ten of England's greatest inland courses — the heart of the heathland tradition. Most cluster in the sand belt within an hour of London: Sunningdale's Old and New, Walton Heath, Swinley Forest, The Berkshire's Red and Blue, St George's Hill and Worplesdon — fast-running fairways framed by heather, pine and silver birch, the work of golden-age masters Willie Park Jr., Herbert Fowler and Harry Colt. West Sussex carries the style south to the Downs at Pulborough; Woodhall Spa's Hotchkin Course reaches north into Lincolnshire, long rated among the finest inland courses in the British Isles. Nearly all are private members' clubs that welcome visiting golfers by arrangement. A pursuit through the birthplace of inland golf.
